北宋年间，外族纷纷觊觎大宋国土，形成汉、胡对立的局面。丐帮帮主乔峰因拒绝副帮主妻康敏之爱遭报复指为契丹人后裔而受尽中原武林人士唾弃。峰为平反遂四出追查身世，期间认识了大理世子段誉及虚竹和尚，并结拜为兄弟。峰追寻身世时屡遭奸人所害，含冤莫白，更错杀红颜知已阿朱，后为救朱妹阿紫寻医至大辽，辗转成为大辽国南院大王，但与中原关系则更趋恶劣。
南宋年间，蒙古大军围攻襄阳城。大侠郭靖带领城内军民殊死抵抗。郭靖义弟杨康的遗腹子杨过投身古墓派 ，并与师父小龙女展开一场为世俗所不容的师徒之恋。欲杀郭靖为父报仇的杨过，最终却感于郭靖 “侠之大者、为国为民”的赤子之心，毅然助其守城。屡建奇功的神雕大侠杨过，身受断臂之痛、情花之毒，却不畏艰难险阻，一心追求自己的真爱，经历世人难以想象的种种磨难，有情人终成眷属。
The story took place in Snowy Mountain in the coldest part of Manchuria, one Winter's morning in 1781. The Dragon Lodge party ran into the Horse Spring Banditry who were there to unearth a buried casket. They were waylaid yet by the Peking Overland Convoy. All three parties had designs on the metal casket, supposedly housing a poniard, which was an heirloom of the Martial Brotherhood. A monk arrived on the scene and the invited the parties to the eyrie on the summit. The lord of the eyrie happened to be away summoning help to fight Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, who was scheduled to arrive on the summit at noon. While waiting, each one in the parties began recounting incidents which took place some twenty years before. The excitement, intrigue and action in these incidents are well dramatized, with one event firmly intertwining with others in the past, developing into a vendetta involving the offspring of several families. The story ends with a fight between Fox, the hero of the story, and his sworn enemy, but the result of the fight is untold, left to the imagination and creative power of individual readers.
《倚天屠龙记》为香港作家金庸所著武侠小说“射雕三部曲”之一。男主角为张无忌，女主角则为赵敏，为其三部曲之最后一部。作为跨越宋元明三个朝代的武侠传奇故事的结局篇，其他二部包括《射雕英雄传》、《神雕侠侣》是同一个时期（南宋）的故事，角色也互相熟识；到《倚天屠龙记》时，已过了快一百年，属于元末明初的故事。《倚天》书中角色有许多为《射雕》和《神雕》之故人、后人及传人。
《射雕英雄传》作于一九五七年到一九五九年，在《香港商报》连载。回想十多年前《香港商报》副刊编辑李沙威兄对这篇小说的爱护和鼓励的殷殷情意，而他今日已不在人世，不能让我将这修订本的第一册书亲手送给他，再想到他那亲切的笑容和微带口吃的谈吐，心头甚感辛酸。
《射雕》中的人物个性单纯，郭靖诚朴厚重、黄蓉机智狡狯，读者容易印象深刻。这是中国传统小说和戏剧的特征，但不免缺乏人物内心世界的复杂性。大概由于人物性格单纯而情节热闹，所以《雕》比较得到欢迎，曾拍过粤语电影，在泰国上演过潮州剧的连台本戏，目前香港在拍电视片集；曾译成了暹罗文、越南文、马来文（印尼）；他人冒名演衍的小说如《江南七侠》、《九指神丐》等等种类也颇不少。但我自己，却觉得我后期的某几部小说似乎写得比《射雕》有了些进步。
A new and revised 8-volume edition of The Proud Smiling Wanderer by Jin Yong. The author's most famous book. The story is different from most of his other books in the way this story has no specific historic background, but an in depth portrayal of human nature with its anti-traditional themes.
